Can I paint the door contacts for my alarm system?

I just had a new alarm system installed. The color of the door contacts does not match our home colors at all. The tech said the contact would not work if I painted them. I had painted the contacts of my last system without any issue. I have read on-line, that is is okay to paint and that it is not okay to paint the contacts. Which is it? I do not understand how paint would interfere with a magnetic contact, or the radio transmission to the control unit. What if all but the contact side were painted?

Can anyone help clear this up before my wife comes home? 😉

If it's magnetic, it's fine. Just do a light coat.
