Can i play in 1080p on a 1440p monitor?

I'm thinking of buying the Dell S2417DG 144hz, gsync, 1440p, 24 inch monitor.

But what will happen if I game in 1080p on a 1440p monitor? Cause some of the games I won't be able to run In 1440p and get 60fps on my GTX 1060.

No, it'll be fine. Things will look slightly bigger at 1080 compared to 1440, but still crisp.
