I have an i7 4790k @ 4 GHz and I'm either going to get a gtx 970 or 980, will a 650w PSU be able to run either setup?

But, yes a 650 watt PSU willc ertainly power any 9xx series card .... however I would not buy one.

1. I never recommend buying less than a 650 watter because anything with a lower power rating of decent quality will cost maybe $5 or so less than a quality 60 watt unit.

2. Have you considered that at some point you may want to add a 2nd card in SLI ?

The EVGA G2 850 watter is a ridiculously priced 850 watt unit at $89.99 and comes very close to matching the Seasonic X series ($140) and Corsair HXi Series ($190)

Good 650 watters ....

Seasonic X Series - $90

Yes. The new Maxwell line of cards from Nvidia offer great performance at just a fraction of the power usage of the former generation. Some would argue that the 970 is the beat-all card in the series (or of all time even) due to it's price vs. performance ratio and I'd be inclined to agree! And Merry Christmas to you. :)

Corsair HX650 - $100

EVGA G1 - $70 (A significant step down from the G2 but 10 year warranty)

When you consider that the disappointing Corsair CSM 650 is $80, being able to get a quality EVGA 850 watt unit for just $10 more should be an ez decision.
