Can I pull out the HDD out of an external and put it in my laptop as an internal?

Yes.

Just be careful removing the drive as some enclosures have hidden screws.

Maybe/probably.

Some external drives have the USB->SATA interface on the enclosure, instead of exposing regular SATA connections on the actual drive.

Only way to know is to take it apart and see.
