Can i record ps3 gameplay with an external hard drive and if yes how can i make the video to HD

Well guys...plz let me know if with a 320gb memory external hard drive can i record while playing ps3 or just a tv programme.Also, if yes will it start recording while i have plung in the candle to TV or at another time? Thanks!!! My TV,if needed,is Samsung Smart TV
