Can I recover password?

My teenager's best friend added a password on her laptop, which uses Windows 8.1. Then she forgot the password like the next day. Teenagers right?! Is there anyway for her to recover or reset the password without doing a full system reset? There was a local computer shop that offered to do it for her for $35, but her family can't afford that. She uses it for school and I'd really like to help her if possible so she doesn't lose any work. She doesn't have a password reset disk. I have a computer and a USB drive if needed to help her out.
