Can I replace i3 with i5 in Acer X3960?

I was under the assumption I could upgrade my i3 processor with any intel i-series that had the same socket type. I just bought the i5-3570k, updated the bios, installed it, but the computer did not boot. Instead it made 4 long beeps (0.5 seconds each) and sat idle without booting. I am unable to find the beep code for this. Is there something I'm missing with the installation?

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know if it's possible to change clock speeds too? The current i3 I have is a 2100 model running at 3.1GHz. Can I, for example, get a 3.4GHz processor second generation?

If you get a i5 2500/2400/2300 you should be fine.

I don't quite understand your question... New i5 will perform much better than any i3 in general even if i3 has more GHz than the i5...
