Hi guys, I have a sony vpcf119fs laptop and my hardrive is no longer working.

I understand you can replace it with virtually any hardrive assuming it will fit, however, when i ordered new hardrive, I found that there is a pata port that was not present in the original one. I will attach images to see what im talking about.

This above is my original hardrive, as you see, there are two prong sets, but not a third one located in the far right.

However, the new hardrives I bought have another set of prongs on the far right.
I'm sorry if the picture is fuzzy but I can't open it or I can't return it.

Okay, so here is a picture of my laptop below:

My fear is those extra set of prongs will spark against the metal.
Can I use this new hardrive?

Thanks in advance

Your new hard drive is also SATA. The pins on on the right are for diagnostic only, so you should leave them disconnected. I don't think these pins will touch your laptop' body, but you can isolate them well before putting the drive in your laptop. Properly cut piece of never-used pencil eraser will do the job.

Hey thanks man! Yes, they are both SATA hard drives. I'm guessing it should never contact metal at all? The pins on the right?

Are there hardrives that do not have this? I have bought so far 4 hardrives and all of them have this diagnostic pins.

If I were to buy another hardrive without these pins, what would they be called? What is the proper term for these pins?

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense, if there is no other choice, i can just eraser them lol.

An SSD would be ideal. I don't know much about them, but they are quite expensive. Lets forget about the expenses.... im kinda insecure about my laptops usb port, sometimes power runs in it and not.. this rarely happens though but wouldnt that damage the info on the usb sdd if the power adruptly disconnected?

It is tempting....

for me i use a lot of software, so i need a huge memory.

I meant a SSD to replace the HDD. Not a USB drive. You can get 2 1/2" SSDs that fit in the bay that the HDD is in.
