Hey! I'm building a new rig

specs:
i7 4790k
Gigabyte Gaming GT
980(buying another in a month or so)
750(Physx)

Now I don't want any "don't run a physx card"

All I want to know is if I can run 3 cards off that mobo and CPU combo.
as the 4790k only has 16PCIE lanes, Yet my local techie says I can run 3-4 cards off this mobo-Cpu combo

Solution

Oh yeah, that is one of the best PSUs on the block, you will be fine. :)

Your local techie is correct you will have no problems running 3 or its maximum of 4 cards with that CPU. Depending on your RAM, probably no major bottlenecking. go for 1866MHz ram.

Posting full system specs:
I7 4790k
GTX980(2x soon)
gtx 750
8gb ddr3 2400MHz Ram(Upgrading to 16Gb later on)
crucial 860Watt PSU
240GB SSD
1Tb WD Blue
corsair 900D (I don't want to have to buy a new case in 6-7 years)
1440p monitor

Since the motherboard has a PLX chip, you have 2 x16 PCI-e 3.0 + 2 x8 PCI-e 2.0 lanes, you could run 4 graphics cards in that machine and the motherboard would run it just fine.

That is a very nice motherboard.

As for your PSU, what exact model is it? Although its wattage appears enough, the quality may be lacking, but I doubt.

Sorry its a Corsair Ax860i not a crucial, I kinda had to skimp on the PSU... bad idea but I figured if this would do the job until i look at 3 way SLI 980s with the 750 as physx
