I just bought a new pc (custom built by me) and then the Fury X came out, so I was wondering, can I run one monitor with 1080p games using my 970, and then switch to another monitor for 4k games using my Fury X? I know they cannot be joined via SLI or Crossfire because they are different companies, but can they run together doing different things?

Needs to be the same card architecture...E.G...

Nvidia 980 GTX
Nvidia 980 GTX

ATI Radeon 7890
ATI Radeon 7890

Multi CPU Mobo? Why would you need it? I would not waste your time and efforts thinking about it. Cheaper to just get two cards.

Thanks

Ok thanks, is there any way I could sell a used gtx 970 and swap it for an r9 fury x? I might get the r9 nano instead because that looks really nice

you can run them, but not at the same time and not for alternate frame rendering.
You can set up a virtual machine and install the amd drivers for that OS, then you can change between OSs and use the 2 card for different tasks.
I don't think it's possible to use both on the same OS, if it would be a 970 and a titan x or a quadro it may be possible, but i think not with 2 different drivers.

for sli or cfx setups you need the same cards.

regarding your second question, the r9 nano is likely a worse card than a 970. If you want to upgrade your 970 to anything then get a 980ti. it's a lot better card than a 970, however if i were you i would wait until pascal hits in 2016.
