Can I run all the fans from this cable?

Hi everyone, Im in the middle of my new build and the PSU I have is modular and has a cable that plugs into the PSU, has 4 4-pin peripherals, and at the very end has a 4pin (female) that looks like it can plug into one of my fan channel on the mobo. Is it capable of controlling all the fans connected in the line?

That link is to a pic of the exact cable in question. Its the cable in the far upper left of the layout. I am just curious because my mobo can only handle 4 fans but my case can handle 6.

Do NOT plug that into your fan header! Its for a floppy drive, if you hook it into the motherboard you will likely blow out your fan header.


Any fan connected to the power supply directly through a molex connector will always run at full speed unless it has a switch on the fan itself. You can connect the fans to the motherboard or the PSU, but never both, so you could run 4 fans off of the motherboard directly(if they have the connector) and two directly off the PSU to get the 6 for your case.

The fan headers on the motherboard provide power to the fans connected.
The fans connected to the motherboard can have the speed detected and be regulated through the bios through voltage or PWM (Pulse Width Modulated).
The floppy power connector on the PSU would probably not fit anyway on the motherboard (safety feature).
The 4-pin fan connector for the motherboard looks different and has a safety feature to prevent the wrong cable from being connected. You can connect either 3-pin (old) or 4-pin fans to a motherboard 4-pin connector.
As long as you do not force a connection, you should be fine. Also read the labels if any on the connectors. It should connect easily.
