As the title states I want to use an i7-4790k on an MSi h87-G43 board. I already have the board, and I want to take advantage of the i7-4790k's base clock rate of 4.0 GHz, even if I can't overclock on this board, but can I? MSi hasn't added this processor to the list of supported processors yet, but by all accounts it's essentially the same processor as the Haswell and Haswell Refresh, which are both supported, but with better TIM.

Solution
Don't assume a Haswell Refresh processor will work on an H87 motherboard until the manufacturer specifically says so. It will need a BIOS update to work, and its up to MSI to decide to provide it or not.

The i7-4790K does run 400 MHz faster than the -4790 at stock, so I can see where that may be worthwhile. Its up to you if its worth the extra money.

You probably can use it, I would advise to update the MB BIOS before doing so. Was gonna state you could use the 4790 instead of the 4790k, but saw that it's clock is set as 3.6 GHz instead of the 4.0 GHz.

I guess I'll have to wait and see if MSi will support this processor or not. I had the BIOS flashed to the latest version currently available (ver. 2.8) which provides Haswell Refresh support, but I don't want to buy the new processor yet if it's not a sure thing that Devil's Canyon (i7-4790k and i5-4690k) is supported.

Actually ksham, if you look at the list closely there is no 4690k, there are several 4690 variants, but not the unlocked version. That's the reason for my question. I don't know if the k sku is/will be supported.

Hello, first I must sincerely apologize for my misleading information there. I should not post when I am tired. haha so again, I am so sorry and I apologize for the inconvenience that I may have caused.

That said, the MSI H87-G43 motherboard does support most Devil's Canyon CPU according to MSI's website. The TDP for the motherboard is 84W, which would explain why MSI isn't listing the K-series CPUs from Devil's Canyon because they have a TDP of 88W. Although I do not recommend doing so, the likelihood of it working is still fairly high unless your CPU will be on high load 24/7 because CPU nowadays no longer run at maximum power at all times.

Can you post a link to where they say this? I don't expect to really be stressing my rig, I just want to have the better processor since the price difference isn't very much. If I can be sure it is supported I'll order the 4790k today.

Ah, right, its 88 W. I can see the concern, then, but I think many Z87 motherboards routinely handle more than 84 W when Haswell i5's and i7's are overclocked on them. It would probably be fine, but I'm sure more information on that will start popping up once the processors have been on the market for a bit longer.

Ok guys, I broke down and bought the 4790k. I can personally confirm that yes it will run on the MSi H87-G43 board provided you have bios 2.8 at the stock 4.0GHz speed. Thanks again for all the help.

Awesome! Thank you for the followup. I hope that you enjoy your new gem. :)

Hi, pfish! Can you use the intel turbo boost feature with H87 board and 4790k ?

What about B85-G41?
How do you think guys, is it possible to run this cpu with the cheap motherboard?
Thanks for your response!

I guess you are the one who crave to buy my old h87 or B85 😀

Actually, the question is can these old boards support the Turbo Boost?
Just curious :)

I HAVE THE H87 G43 ALSO AND WAS THINKING OF GETTING THE 4790K. A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION THAT WILL SAVE EVERYBODY A LOT OF SEARCHING. CAN YOU ALTER OR CHANGE THE CPU +/- RATIO In IN THE BIOS FOR A 4790K (IN OTHER WORDS CAN YOU GO ABOVE 40 TO SAY 44X OR 45X????)???

well???? can you change the multiplier or adjust it to go above 40x to say 46x????
THAT WOULD HELP A LOT. i'm about to get me a 4790K and am wondering if all i'll ever see is 4.0ghz???
cause 4.5 would be nice or god forbid even FIVE😉

WELL TO ANSWER MY OWN QUESTION YES!!! THE ANSWER IS YES!!!!!!!

YOU CAN OVERCLOCK ON THE MSI H87-G43 - TO TAKE THAT CHUMPS

ALL YOU DO IS USE THE SHIFT+THE "+" SIGN OR NO SHIFT AND THE MINUS SIGN AND YOU CAN GO ABOVE 40X YOU CAN EVEN GO UP TO 46 IN THE BIOS AND THE TURBO ON A 4790K GETS TURNED OFF (ALTHOUGH IT RUNS HOT ON THE STOCK COOLER ON A STRESS TEST) BUT OTHER THAN THAT YES!! YES IT WORKS... I NOW HAVE MY BRAND NEW i7 4790K RUNNING AT 4500MHZ/4.5GHZ ON STOCK VOLTAGE ON A LOWLY MSI-H87-G43 (7816) USED MOTHERBOARD OFF KIJIJI WINNIPEG.... I OVERCLOCKED A 4790K ON A $40 BOARD!!! HAWHAHWHAHWHAW TAKE THAT INTEL!!!
