Can i run gta V on 32 bit windows ?

Yes this, plus a gtx 970 wouldn't even work properly in a 32 bit environment. Just reinstall as 64 bit.

Don't make assumptions. We don't know his full spec, least of all the GPU.

If he has no GPU, what will you tell him? He will get 60fps?

Also, the game can take in excess of 7gb in some cases...like mine

Well, he said he's getting a gtx 970 so I'm running my "assumption" off of that. he'll be severely CPU limited, and to be honest I'm having a hard time assessing whether the game will be CPU bound before it is limited by the RAM issue

Let me make it easier.

The first problem here is a 32 bit OS. This is the bottleneck.

He will run out of ram before he even gets to the settings menu.

After that, the 970 is far more powerful than an fx-4100 system would normally incorporate, so the cpu is bottleneck 2:

Steps:

Reinstall OS TOP PRIORITY in 64-bit. (Use https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ and write down your key)

Then look at upgrading the CPU to a fx-6300 for example and going down the 280x route or so. It will create a far better balance.

Either way, if you go 970 gtx / 280x / Voodoo 3d you need MUCH more firepower on the cpu level and you will need 8GB of ram!!! otherwise any upgrade is useless.

Well, it doesn't matter what your current GPU is, the problem is that your OS isn't enough. Minimum for GTA V is 64-bit Windows 7 SP1/8/8.1 (or Windows Vista SP2 if you have an nVidia GPU).

So, the absolute minimum you will need to do to even launch GTA V, let alone play at any resolution at any kind of quality setting, is upgrade to 64-bit Windows 7. I would also highly recommend upgrading to at least 8GB of RAM, if for no other reason than to assure good overall system performance (& because 4GB is the minimum for GTA V, 8GB is recommended).

Beyond that, your CPU is above minimum. The big question is what your current GPU is, and at what resolution you will be playing. With your CPU, I doubt you're currently gaming any higher than 1080p (& even that might be stretching it), so you don't need a GTX 970 (or an AMD R9 290/290X). Given the recommended GPUs & your current CPU, a better & cheaper buy would be something like the R9 270/270X (they're slightly faster rebranded HD 7870s, & they're currently between $150 & 200 a pop). As an alternative, if you can swing it you might consider getting the GTX 750Ti & upgrading your CPU to a FX-6300 -- that, of course, will depend on if your board is an AM3+ & if it can support the CPU. And before anyone weighs in, the FX-6300 is better than his current CPU, it's solidly between the minimum & recommended AMD CPUs, & using it instead of going to an Intel build means he doesn't have to reinstall his OS just to try & play GTA V.

It actually limits your ram to 3.5GB. :) But this all depends on your Graphics Card. 32-bit Windows has an address space of 4GB. Part of that is used by system BIOSes and graphics memory. With a 256MB graphics card about 3.3-3.5GB of RAM can be addressed and used, assuming you have 4GB fitted. If you fit a graphics card with 1GB of memory only about 2.6-2.8GB of the RAM would be addressable and usable.

Yes, this is correct. 32 Bit has a 4GB address space. The GTX 970 is a 4GB card, and with 4GB of RAM, only a very small proportion of the GTX 970's RAM would be able to be used.

The biggest problem is that the address memory in 32 Bit is to low for his setup. 32 Bit has a 4GB address limit. His GPU + RAM is 8GB of RAM. Therefore the RAM and GPU would be fighting for a space in the address space. This is going to mess up any performance in gaming.

In short OP re-install in 64 Bit.

Yes it will. Don't confuse VRAM with System RAM; they're two totally different things. The people who have spent the last decade subtracting VRAM from RAM are, frankly, wrong.

The way it really works is that the videocard reserves a memory range (below the 4GB limit) to map regions of its own onboard RAM into, so the system can access it as needed. When another part of the video RAM is needed, the card simply maps out the current region and maps in the new one.

Heres the best explanation for how it works:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussinovich/archive/2008/07/21/3092070.aspx

Odds are, the GPU will reserve a GB at most for it's own internal addressing, leaving just under 3GB of system RAM. (Other items, like addressing all the other interfaces on the motherboard, will probably leave 2.5GB remaining).

But no, as GTA V is a 64-bit exe, he can't even launch it, making the issue moot.

Thanks evryone for the suggestions but i don't know how to upgrade to 64 bit windows and i wish i could, i dont have a disk, i propbably should have mentioned i'm getting an i5 4690k 16gb RAM aswell, sorry!

sure it's free but it will still be 32bit because you're upgrading from a 32bit OS. you can't "upgrade" to 64 bit, it's entirely different

Hi guys,

I have more or less the same question but my build is configured and set up in a different way.

  • nVidia GTX750 Ti V2
    Intel i5-3330 @ 3.00 GHZ
    8GB RAM
    Windows 10 32x (previously Windows 7 32x)

My question is, is there a way that I can install windows 64x on my SSD whilst I'm in 32x? Partition the drive, install 64x and then boot up, delete 32x partition and voila?

Well idk your on Windows 10 which GTA V wont support but i suggest that you go reformat and go to 64 bit windows 7 or 8.1
