[SOLVED] Can I run programs on my pc from a bootable usb flash drive?

I use bootable usb to do fresh windows install or for image restore, but can I use it to run software in my pc via the bootable interface on the USB drive?
Do I need a specialized bootable usb, like one produced by Active@boot disk or O&O software? or an open source bootable software can achieve the same pupose?

You can run so-called "portable" apps from a USB pen drive with no need to boot from it.

If you downloaded MS windows installation media it has an advanced option to start a command line and so you can use command line software with it.
MS provides windows to go which needs uefi to boot but you could install to an usb and it would work just like a normal installation of windows were you could install any software you want.
If you need to boot on an older PC you would have to make a windowsPE which is very restrictive and only supports some software.
The specialized bootable usbs like the ones you mentioned use one of those methods or a minimalistic linux or dos installation depending on what they want to do.
