I was thinking about eventually running two gtx 1080s in SLI and I don't know if my motherboard supports that or not. Even if it does should I upgrade my motherboard for one or two 1080s?
The motherboard I was thinking about is the Asus Z170-A.

No current graphics cards actually hit the bandwidth limit for an 8x slot, so no problems there. :)

Unless you are dissatisfied with the sound system (Realtek ALC892), I can't think of any reason to upgrade that MoBo.

And while two 970, 980, 980 Tis would have been a "no brainer", not in a position to judge the viability of SLI on the 1080 as yet.

a) Nvidia is easing off on SLI, 3 / 4 way SLI is no longer officially supported tho you can request a special "key" to enable it if you have appropriate MoBo / CPU to support it

b) 2-way scaling is down across the board ... up at 50% at 2160p, 33% at 1440p and just 18% at 1080p

c) Could be many possible reasons for b) .... have GPUs advanced just too fast for CPUs to catch up.... the fact that scaling increases with resolution supports this.

d) n With no competition from AMD at this level, is nVidia sitting on driver development in order to make the 1080 more attractive than two 1070s ?

e) What effect will DX12 have ?

f) With console ports getting more and more popular, will game devs drop support ?
