Will the following build work, and can I save money downgrading something without much performance loss (PSU, maybe, or RAM brand?)
  • Ryzen 5 3600
  • Asus A320M
  • 8GB DDR4 3200MHz Kingston Fury
  • SSD Kingston A400 240GB SATA
  • Corsair CX550

Also:
  • I'll add another 8GB RAM in the future.
  • I have no plans of adding a GPU in the near future.
  • I'll occasionally run processor-intensive simulations for days at a time.
Any help is appreciated :)

Solution
Your budget must be a little tight, considering the gpu option.

1)If that motherboard is already updated, I have no problem with it.

2)Change the Ryzen 3600 to a 3400g: the igpu in that one is a good deal stronger than a R7 240. Later on, you can get a decent gpu when you have a little more saved up.

3)No need to change from the Corsair CX550. The Gigabyte unit would be taking a step backwards.

-That motherboard does support Ryzen 3000... just not out of the box.

-2200g, 2400g, 3200g, and the 3400g have integrated graphics. The higher end Ryzens do not, and thus require a dedicated gpu.

-Please get 2 sticks of ram. 2x 4GB or 2x 8GB. You'll just risk wasting more money going the 'I'll buy one stick now, and add another later' route.

This was great help. Did some changes on the setup to include a GPU and RAM, and also to get hand of some discounts that I found. Would this work, given I have an updated version of the motherboard, with Ryzen 3000s support?
  • Ryzen 5 3600
  • Gigabyte AB350M
  • 2x8GB DDR4 3200MHz Kingston Fury
  • Radeon R7 240
  • Gigabyte 650W 80+ Bronze
  • SSD Kingston A400 240GB SATA

And is something in here overkill? (Maybe 3200MHz RAM doesn't make that much of a difference over 2666MHz, or the PSU is too much?)

Thanks again :)
