can i set up a wifi extender directly from a modem?

i want to know if i can get signal from modem to get wifi on my smartphone with wifi extender

Depends on exactly what type of modem you have, if you have a modem and router in one (also called a gateway) then you can use a WiFi extender. If it's just a modem then you need a router.
