Can I split a single HDD?

Here's the story, I tried to open our old PC and I saw a single HDD in it. But whenever I open "My Computer" it shows two storage places (C: =195gb and D: =270gb), but, but, I only have single 500gb HDD. When we bought it, it was ready to use so I don't have an idea. Can you really split a single (for example single 2TB Toshiba HDD) and make it appear as 2 in your computer (C: = 1tb and D: = 1tb)?

Solution

It is 'possible', but generally no real benefit.
Maybe have the OS and applications in one partition, and everything else in a different partition.
Having 3 or 4 means that at some point in the near future, one of those partitions will be too small for what you want to use it for.

Personally, I prefer individual physical drives rather partitions on a single drive.

How about if I partitioned a single 2tb hdd into 3parts or maybe 4, is it possible? Maybe for 3; one 1tb, one 500gb and another 500gb. And maybe for 4, equal parts?

I always partition my drives (assuming they are large enough. I have a 1tb drive in 3 partitions, 1 500gb wd blue and an old 250gb seagate. I dont have a problem running out of space on any drive/partition. So long as my main drive is 300gb, it doesnt come close to running out from installed apps. All other data goes on other drives though.
