Hello! I have a question I'm sure many have answers before, but I just want to get more info before I proceed. My questions is can I still use the same HDD if I upgrade motherboard and cpu? I'll be upgrading AMD to AMD and cpu. Will this effect anything? I know motherboards store files but since its the same I assume its okay?

Below is my current MB & CPU. Below that is the Upgrade I want to do!!

-Current motherboard- GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2 AM3+ AMD 760G + SB710 Micro ATX AMD
-Current CPU- AMD FX-4100 (old, I know that's why the upgrade 😛)

-Upgrade -Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard
-Upgrade- AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor.

And if the only process is to reformat my hdd do I lose all my programs etc?

Any information and motherboard/cpu recommendations are also appreciated. Thank You wonderful people. !

Solution
Yes, your current HDD will work on upgraded mobo. No issue there. I also recommend UD3P as suggested by SR-71 Blackbird.

Windows Boot
If you are using OEM version windows 7 and above then you would have to install the windows again on the new mobo.

If you are not using OEM version of windows 7 and above then you don't need to install the windows again. Let it boot, once logon, install the new drivers after un-installing the older ones.

However, for XP, what ever the case, you would need to install the windows again.

Hopefully that would suffice.

It just might work since you are using the same manufacturer and both boards are AM3+ boards. The configuration files and MB drivers might be similar enough to not get BSODs when booting so you can set up everything correctly. back up all of your important stuff beforehand.
