I have 2 cpu options for streaming. A core i7-860 or an FX 6100 6 core. Could I possible use any of these to stream at 720p and 30fps paired with an RX 480? Thanks to everybody in advance.

Both of those CPU's will just be too weak. Wouldn't be a good idea. You may get 30fps @720p, but it really won't look good, and you won't have a great in game experience either. Out of the two i'd go I7 860, but I wouldn't spend money on it. If it was given to me, then maybe.

You really need a more powerful base to stream/game at decent settings and output. Your RX480 with a decent CPU and 16gb of ram, would be able to do what you want.

Something like this:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor ($117.90 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock B450 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard ($79.88 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($64.98 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G3 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($74.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $337.74
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Straight up: no. That really isn't a good idea. However, if you are on the market for a good CPU that's not expensive, I would recommend AMD Ryzen 5 2600. It's a great CPU that will most likely tackle streaming, only for about 160 USD, which isn't much if you ask me, considering what you get for the price.

Yeah I don’t have much to spend on the computer. Its being given to me. I have access to 16gb DDR3 ram. Would that work? I just don’t want to have to get a new motherboard, cpu, ram, etc. is there a good streaming CPU for socket 1156, 1155, or AM3? Those are the ones I have now. Thanks

Even a I7 7700k can have issues. Your asking to put together something that will just disappoint you.

Save for the build above, sell some parts to offset the cost. Going cheap is a waste of money. Upgrading those systems, will not give you what you want.

Okay, cool. I have 8 sticks of 2gb Ddr3 ram I know I might be able to sell, I dunno. But thanks! I appreciate it very much!

You can stream just fine if you use your graphics card to do it, you'll lose about 2-5fps, but your CPU will be irrelevant.

Using your graphics card to stream will make the picture look blockier during fast scenes which is why big streamers use a separate PC to stream with. Gives them the cleanest picture possible at lower bitrates.

The newer Nvidia Turing based cards(GTX 1660 and up) have a cleaner hardware encoder built into the architecture. It looks as good as OBS in FAST preset at 6mbps, when compared to CPU encoding.
