Hello Community,

My dad recently bought a new pc for his home office. His new PC contained a Intel Core i7-4790K. We have an other PC at home. This is our main PC where i play all my heavy games. This PC contains a Intel I7-3820. We were thinking about swapping CPU's between our PC to upgrade our main PC. My question is: Is it safe to just 'swap' the CPU's without causing any trouble? I think my gaming experience will improve once i got his CPU. My fathers PC has a z97-k motherboard. Our main PC has a sabertooth x79 motherboard. Can you guys please help me? Ive switched graphic cards once but never switched an CPU. is it as easy as that?

Thank you,

Regards,

Stijn

Solution
You can't swap those CPUs they used different LGA sockets. LGA 1150 for the 4790k and LGA 2011 for the 3820. You'd have an easier time just switching entire computers and moving your files and stuff to the new one.
You would have to swap the entire motherboard and processor, and probably reinstall windows on both machines.

This is because:
X79 uses the LGA2011 socket, with 2011 pins.
Z97 uses the LGA1150 socket, with 1150 pins.

The two sockets are quite different, and not compatible with each other.

If you were looking for a CPU upgrade, grabbing something like a 3930K would be a good option.

Thank you for the answers! i appreciate it. I think i will just swap PC's and put my graphic card from my main pc in my dads pc. I will have to move all the files but that's not a problem. Thanks again
