Can I swap the circuit board of two different brand hard drives with the same capacity?

Technically I could do the experiment by myself but I do not have two good hard drives for me to mess up with. So I am posting this question. If I swap the circuit boards of two hard drives of different brands but same size, do they still work? Has someone done the same before?
