I currently have a AMD FX 6350 and it has started to mess up. I was planning on upgrading my cpu to an I5 4690K and am fine with buying a new motherboard but I don't know it that will work. It would be great to find out if it would still work regardless of switching cpu and motherboard.

Yes, if you but an Intel socket motherboard and buy the apropriate CPU for it it should work. Your power supply should be a good quality one however.

I would suggest upgrading to the 6th gen Intel CPU's, they are more powerful than previous generations and the price gap isn't ridiculously large.

If your AMD cooler supports an Intel LGA 1151 socket and you plan on overclocking (as I see from your choice of an i5 4690k) then I suggest something like this, if your case can fit that motherboard properly. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/LJMdqk

If you are going to upgrade your motherboard and cpu, it is best to go with current tech.
A $125 I3-6100 and a LGA1151 motherboard will be a nice boost over your FX-6350.
You will likely want 8gb of DDR4 ram also.
Here is a review of the i3-6100. Note that it wins over even a FX-8370.

If you want a more robust cpu upgrade for gaming, then ignore all the in between I5 choices and buy a $230 I5-6600K and a Z170 motherboard.
