can i take my HDD with me and put it in another machine

We live 6 mo. here 6 mo. there and I want to take my desktop HDD back and forth. I can't take the whole tower just the HDD. Can I slave this to my laptop or install it into another desktop tower. I need to use one software program that's on it.

Yes. As long as you aren't using it as the primary drive, you'll have no issues at all. You should be careful traveling with it though, HDDs shouldn't be subjected to too much force.
