Solution
Hey there shaunak1. The WD Blue drives are reliable general usage HDDs. As each WD drive, they have been tested extensively to ensure the highest quality and that everything works properly. But you should always have one thing in mind, no matter which brand you're talking about, HDDs are mechanical devices and they might fail or develop hardware errors over time. It's important to always keep a backup of your most important data and to check your HDD every time you have suspicions that there might be something wrong with it. This way in the worst case scenario, if the drive fails, you'd still have your data backed up and you could RMA the drive if it's still under warranty.

Hope that helps.

The hard drive should at least be good for as long as the warranty period. Sometimes hard drives fail before the warranty period but most are good for at least 3 years with normal use. If you're really concerned about data retention, you should back up your most critical data on to DVD / Blu-Ray, to the cloud or a USB flash key depending on how much critical data you have.

Point is that no solution is fool proof or guaranteed 100%, so always have a backup plan.

It's the only HDD I trust with my info, but you should always back up your important data. Also, judging from what I've read they have a longer life spam than the other HDDs out there(don't hold me to my words)

actually they only have an average lifespan

i have a 1 tb caviar blue drive that i used for about 5 years as a torrent drive which means it ran 24/7 for years straight. i still use it now for data storage and it is still running strong after about 7 years.

about the best testimonial i can give for the drive :)

used all the brands but i only trust my data to WD after many heartbreaks from the other brands. but as others have said, if it is important, back it up to at least 2 places cause even the best can fail eventually.
