I am getting a new 840 evo ssd to put in my laptop. When I transfer my data over can I just put my old hard drive and my new ssd into an old desktop that has space for both, clone it and then put the new ssd into my laptop? the desktop has sata connectors. Thank you.

I think you misunderstood me. I was talking about the new SSD and installation of a OS in it. Best way to install an OS is to fresh install it, and not to clone it. You can transfer files and data's in any way you wish, but not the OS.

The only reason for that, OS is not transferable, it have to be installed. Cloning is kind of transferring, and you could run into trouble. Am I clear to you now ! Good luck.

Why should I not do so? I am using windows 7 home premium. What advantage does a fresh os instal fix? Thank you.
