[SOLVED] Can I Turn a 2D Trace into a 3D Object in Blender?

Hey there folks,

I'm wondering if there is a way to create 3D shade from a 2D plain in Blender, similar to the image below.

This would be incredibly useful when tracing around a concept you've made and placed as a background image, just to get started of course, to give you a shape you can work off.

Solution
Looks like it depends on the original 2D you're starting with.
Personally I would start with a grid (square by default). Extrude along x or y axis to give the shape.
Then enter edit mode, select the entire mesh, extrude along z-axis for the final 3D shape.

Not sure about starting with an outline though....
