Can I turn a ps3 into a pc?

Nope. The PS3's PowerPC RISC architecture isn't even close to the x86 used in PCs, and even if it was, it would be a process more involved than 'follow these steps' in order to recompile a kernel to run on the platform. The PS3 simply wasn't designed to be a PC, and thus lacks the hardware and compatibility to do so.

yeah need to look see if in settings it has the other OS option

so technically possible--whether its worth the bother is a different question

Not only that, he's seriously stretching the definition of "PC", esp considering he's referring to MAC as well. The main difference between PC and MAC is Windows vs MAC OS.

I think you know full well what I mean. The reason Windows based computers are largely regarded as PCs while MAC based ones are regarded as MAC is one is far more open and compatible with software and general computing than the heavily restricted MAC, Linux, or other type OSes. Most people that use MACs or Linux based systems are targeting specific needs, not general wide range computing.

And even though Linux is technically open source, there's not NEARLY as much interest in it from software devs as Windows because there's not many people on it.

So if he means "PC" in the Windows sense like most refer to it, no, he's never going to make a PC out of a PS3. Enough said. You're just confusing him with this gibberish.:sarcastic:

It was obviously a general question, not a query for debate on computing monikers semantics. If he were looking at it from your perspective, he'd not even needed to ask, which makes it all the more obvious "PC" here means Windows based computer.

And no PS3 made since before 2010 has that option and any PS3 that has played a modern game or been online has been updated to have it removed, so while a possibility, only if their PS3 is more than 5 years old and sat in a closet the entire time, then, yes, they can run a crappy linux, you are correct.

...regardless, you're looking at taking a significant amount of time and troubleshooting to run what is likely an unstable build of the Linux kernel on a very specific never-updated version of the PS3. Even if all that ends up working, good luck trying to run any common consumer programs on it, even through WINE, due to the architectural differences between a traditional PC and the PS3.

Long story short, it just isn't worth it. You can pick up what's actually a very reasonable little system for $70 from right here[/ur] (I like these guys - they mostly sell corporate lease returns) if you really want something to mess around with. I butcher inexpensive little systems all the time when I'm just looking for something to do - old(er) hardware is dirt cheap on eBay, and you can toss together a respectable PC for fifty bucks and a bit of time!
