[SOLVED] Can i upgrade GT 640 to a GTX 1050 without buying a new motherboard?

I have a GT 640 on one of my older systems.
My brother wants to buy my old PC but doesn't like the old GT 640 in there.
I know that the GT 640 uses PCIE 2.0 and that the GTX 1050 uses PCIE 3.0

But iv'e heard that in some cases you can use a 3.0 PCIE GPU on a 2.0 PCIE.
Can i upgrade to a GTX 1050 without buying a new motherboard?

(if i can't, then what can i upgrade the GT 640 to?)

Pcie 3.0 cards are backwards compatible with 2.0.
The possibility I could see with it not working lies with the motherboard. Is it from a prebuilt? Does it boast a UEFI bios?

If the GTX 1050 happens to not be supported on that mobo, then GTX 700 series and Radeon R7 line would be the limit.

It may be waste of money upgrading the GT640 to a much newer generation.
I'm quite sure it will work, based on my own experiences with old mobos.

The problem is that an old mobo would have an old generation CPU, that cant really run up to the new GPU.
You may get some new features, but not a fast graphics.
I'd say you'll be disappointed with such a setup.

Go for a bit old gamer PC, thrown out by an upgrader.
