I am going to buy an i7 4790k and I have an i5 4460 right now. Is it possible for me to upgrade the cpu without taking the motherboard out of the case?

In general, you should be able to upgrade your CPU while leaving the motherboard in place. This all depends on how tight the case is, and what other devices are in place, such as the storage drives, and the PSU. Also, make sure your motherboard can handle the proposed processor and supports it.

Mostly depends on if you can get the cooler off without taking the motherboard out of the case. Is there a cutout on the motherboard tray of your case? Also keep in mind this can make things a bit more of a headache than if you just took everything out.

Also why the upgrade from i5 to i7? And is your motherboard a Z-series to take advantage of the unlocked processor?

If the CPUs both use the same socket, you either know the cooler will work for new processor or you have a new cooler, and you can easily install new one, it will work. Most likely...

I think I am good with compatibility, I have an asrock h97 anniversary. And the NZXT S340 has a cutout for the motherboard in the back

I want to livestream at better quality :) The i5 is a bit slower with livestreaming

Do you have a Z87/ Z97 motherboad because if you don't you arent going to be able to overclock the 4790k.

I have no plans to overclock it.
