Solution
A GTX980Ti is not recommended, unless you get a really great deal.

A GTX1070 starts at about $385USD and is similar in general, but slightly more future proof in design for VR.

As said you are MOSTLY going have a CPU bottleneck. Games vary a lot, and for some it will be minimal. For others it will be over 40% loss vs a good CPU.

So...

1) How much is the GTX980Ti?
2) What is your total budget for the GPU?

3) I would consider a GTX1060 or GTX1070 instead. The GTX1070 will also be bottlenecked by the CPU much of the time, but will still perform BETTER than the GTX1060 in some titles.

4) AMD cards not recommended since the DX11 driver uses more of the CPU for AMD. This adds to the CPU bottleneck problem.

5) GTX1060 has 3GB and 6GB...

- I want to say avoid the 3GB but there is currently a big price difference. 3GB version starts at $200USD.

6GB version starts at $250-> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487260&cm_re=gtx_1060-_-14-487-260-_-Product

I prefer 2-fan solutions like this for $270+

Summary:
GTX1060 may be the best choice. I would not pay above $280USD (price issues right now due to availability so may want to wait).

I suggest the 6GB GTX1060 even if it's mostly about future proofing. It will help a few games now. (the 3GB models are slightly slower as well. Almost exactly 90% the performance.
