Hey guys,

I have a friend of mine that's asking if he'll be able to upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge if he does it in the first year (like Windows 7 and 8 users) when it comes out if he gets the Windows 10 TP? He currently has Windows 7.

Thanks,
Christian

The answer here is NO.

If you upgrade to the Windows 10 TP and overwrite your Windows 7 or Windows 8 partition, you will have to purchase Windows 10 when it comes out if you want it.

This information came directly from a rep in a Windows store.

Wow.. that makes no sense..

I agree, I was kind of pissed because I had installed Windows 10 TP on my Surface Pro 3, only to be told that I'll now have to pay for Windows 10.

I don't believe the upgrade will work from the TP. I believe only Windows 7 and 8/8.1. MS also warned you not to install TP on your main computer. The main reason it's a Beta and unstable. The final releases will be different then the TP.

On a surface you should be able restore back to default which will put Windows 8/8.1 on and the do an upgrade for free.

/speculation
That is unknown.
Windows 7, 8, 8.1 owners can upgrade to 10 for free.

How, exactly, is the question. Quite possibly, there will be a mechanism to enter your existing 8.1 license key, and download the relevant Win 10 ISO file.

There will be 2 ways to upgrade, depending on exactly what you are running.
Win 7 SP1 or Win 8.1 S14 can either do it through Windows Update, OR obtain an ISO file to burn to DVD. Then install at your leisure.

So if you have a valid license for Windows 7...it may just be a case of entering your license key to access the ISO file.

/end speculation

Ah, that would make more sense

Not really. I've been Beta testing Windows since WIn95 and you have never been able to upgrade from a Beta1 or Beta2 to the released product. MS also sent out warning suggesting NOT to install TP on your main machine. Once RTM comes out it will be the released version as it will go out to OEM's for driver development and pc installs.

Windows Technical Preview Users Should be Able to Upgrade to RTM Version of Windows 10

A qualified 'yes', as of Dec 6.

Should you be using Win 10 Preview on your main PC? No.

If I am to tell, from what I know, He won't be able to get a legit copy of Windows 10 if he installs Windows 10 TP over his legit Windows 7.
But as MS announced that Windows 7/8/8.1 Users will all get an update to 10(Legit Windows or not). But the pirated versions will not have a valid license and won't have any support.

If your friend has already installed Windows 10 TP over 7 then either he has to pay for 10 or download a pirated version of previous windows and upgrade to Windows 10. Although I don't suggest the latter solution, it is one of the solutions and I thought it was correct to mention it.
