I'd like to upgrade my video card to an RTX 2070 or something in the same tier. Can I add the video card without much trouble or will it require a motherboard & processor upgrade? I'm getting this strange feeling where if I can't upgrade the video card solely, I'll need to get a whole new rig. ;)

Also, I'm currently running at 144hz with DVI-D cables. I believe if I opt for an RTX 2070, I'll need DisplayPort cables to support my monitors, correct?

Note: my motherboard doesn't explicitly support Win 10, so there might be some weirdness.

Motherboard: ASUS p8p67pro b3 revision
Processor: i5-2500k 3.30Ghz 4 core (overclocked to 4.5Ghz, temps max at 70C with prime95)
Video Card: 2x Sapphire Radeon HD7850 OC 2G DDR5 PCIE
Memory: 16GB total - 4 Corsair Vengeance Blu 4 GB PC3-12800 1600mHz DDR3 240-Pin SDRAM
Storage: SSD w Win 10, HDD w Win 7
Power Supply: 850W Core Edition Power Supply XFX
Monitors: 2x ASUS VG248QE Black 24" Gaming Monitor, 144Hz 1ms
Case: Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case
CPU Cooler & Fans: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler, RR-B10-212P-G1
Noctua 140mm Premium Quiet Quality Fan with AAO Frame Technology (NF-A14 PWM)
Noctua NF-P12 120mm x 25mm Cooling Fan 3-Pin - 1300 RPM

Thanks for your input.

Short answer: Yes. You can pop in an RTX 2070 without buying any other new parts. And yes, DisplayPort cables are desirable.

Long answer: I wouldn't upgrade to an RTX 2070 as your CPU won't keep up with it, and 144Hz with this CPU just isn't feasible in newer games (that you can't already run at 144fps with your current rig). A GTX 1660 would be the more logical choice if you keep your current rig, I would say. (Note: this upgrade, too, would not solve all and you might still have trouble reaching 144fps in new games because your CPU can't keep up) If, however, you plan to upgrade your rig in its entirety soon anyway, then go for it and deal with the bottleneck until that time.
