Can I use 4 ram sticks in a z170 MOBO?

I was wondering if i could use 32 gb of ram on 4 sticks even if my MOBO is a z170 Dual channel MOBO.

If this works, which setup would be faster, 2x16 or 4x8

You can but there is no reason to. With dual channel 4x8 behaves the same as 2x16, except the 2x16 is probably cheaper, and leaving slots open allows for future upgrades.

If for some reason you decide to do 4 anyway buy a matched set like they sell the quad channel kits for X99 boards. At least you will be guaranteed compatibility. IMO its a waste of money.

I think you will see little or no difference depending on how you do it.

Also uses less power on the memory controller, so a slightly cooler CPU. Can usually also get a smaller number of memory sticks clocked faster when overclocking.

2x16GB is preferred, it's less stress on the MC (memory controller) which can also help in your CPU OCs if doing that also.
