Can I use a 1 - 6 pin psu with my gpu that requires 2 - 6 pin?

I dont know. Im buying a custom computer and the guy warned me that the power supply couldn't power my gpu because of the adapter things. But its 680 watts, Thats all i know

as far as im concerned MSI 7850 requires 1x6pin pcie power cable. 7870 would require 2x6pin. however only 1x6pin pcie power cable provided by an 680w psu reflects on it quality that cant be good. so running another 6pin through molex adapter cant be recommended!

a true 680w psu would provide at least 2 x 6+2-Pin pcie power cables.!

I plan to. But for now, is there an adapter I can purchase? Can you direct me to anywhere, Im new to this lol.

The box says:

"500w (or greater) power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connectors recommended"

All I know is that the psu thats comes with my comp has 1 - 6-pin PCI connector. I'm going to replace it as you all recommend, but for now is there any adapter I can purchase and what kind? Thanks for ALL ( as in everyone) your help btw!!

Man that really scares me. Is there a HUGE risk that could happen? I don't plan to overclock, I have a amd fx 6300 system. The guy includes a 500w psu but for 40$ extra hes giving me a 680w. I just wanted something COMPATIBLE and SAFE for my gpu. Am I doing this the wrong way?

If the PSU only includes 1 PCIe power connector, it's most likely not built to handle 2. Most custom PC builders will cheap out on the mobo and PSU to save money without sacrificing performance, and it's not a good business practice... Always do research on a PSU before buying it. I bought a cheap $40 PSU from Best Buy temporarily because my other PSU wasn't going to be here for another 2 weeks, and guess what, it fried my GPU the instant I turned it on...

Ok. Im a bit confused now. I opened up my manual and it says under SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

"one 75w 6- pin PCI Express power connector recommended"

BUT, the back of the box says

"500w (or greater) power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connectors recommended"

The cable you linked me to looks exactly like the one that came with my gpu. I'm guessing the black piece goes in the gpu and the two white things go out into the psu?
If it helps, I have the MSI R7850 TWIN FROZR with 2gb ddr5

Ok. Thanks again!! Seriously!! So is the psu supposed to come with those adapters (the cable)? Or are there supposed to be two inputs for the white connectors on the psu? My understanding so far is that my psu has 1 input for the white things, and the connector you linked me to provides me a second, so I can plug both white connectors of my gpu to the psu.

There's only one 6-pin connector on the card:

Your PSU has one of those, so you won't need an adapter.

LOL!! I feel stupid now. Correct me if im wrong, but I thought "6 pin adapter" were the two white things on the cable and when it said I needed "two 6pin" I needed at least 4 of those white things on the end to connect to my psu. Thanks for your help!! Am I using the right terms? Any were I can read up on the connectors, names of pieces and how they work?
