Can I use a 6gb/s Sata cable with any Sata HDD?

I need to connect another internal HDD but all I have left are 6gb/s Sata data cables that came with my motherboard, is it safe to use these cables on both a non 6gb Sata HDD, and a standard Sata port on the motherboard? Will it just act like a standard cable in that situation?

It will work fine just not at 6gb.

it is safe to use these cables on both a non 6gb Sata HDD and a standard Sata port on the motherboard act just fine but remember if your HDD and mobo dont support sata 6GB/s then you will get the max supported speed of your mobo or HHD
