Hello, I have a laptop but I recently bought a desktop. If I connect an HDMI cable from my desktops graphics card onto my laptop, would my laptop show the display of my desktop, or would my laptop try to display on my graphics card and break it? I do have an old tv, but it seems to be bottlenecking the display when I use it as a second monitor for my laptop, so I don’t want to use that as my main display (even though it’s bigger).

No. You can't use a video output port as a video input port. So your laptop port only emits a graphical signal, doesn't receive one to process and view on your laptop.

So you won't be able to use the laptop as a monitor via cabling, but you can potentially do it through a network (or projection on newer equipment).
