I have a PC that was custom built with separate jacks for headphones and mic on the front and mic, headphones, line-in, line out and several others on the back.

I also have an Asus VN247 monitor that has two jacks at the back. A black one that has a pic of headset and a grey one that has a picture I don't recognize

I'm trying to use the mic on this Marshall Major headset (built-in) , it's a 3.5 mm jack with 3 rings.

The PC doesn't recognize the mic when I plug it into headset jacks. I then tried it on the front mic jack of the pc and it does recognize the mic but the sound it records is very faint. Also, when I did that the sound comes out of the monitor and not the headset.

Is there any way I can get it to work or do I need an adapter of some sort?

Solution
Plug the microphone in cable into the MIC IN slot in the io ports of your motherboard. It will be the hole with the PINK ring.

Generally, the front sound ports will provide a weaker sound as the majority do not put out enough power to properly drive headsets. So I suggest, If you have not already, to plug in your headsets audio in cable into the back of the motherboard into the GREEN slot.
