If I use one of my desktops with wifi and use the Ethernet port and plugged it in to the wlan of a router or a switch would I be able to use the other ports on the switch to hook up to other computers?

Solution

I assume you mean plugged into the WAN port of the router, since you can't plug anything in to the wirelss lan.

If you're using Windows, yes. It's called Internet Connection Sharing. You can use just a switch - Windows will handle the NAT (network address translation), making your PC act like a router.

OS X and Linux can do it too, though the setup is a bit more involved.
