Can I use a power splitter cable for my SSD?

I've had my PC for about 6 years now and I've managed fine with just a 1TB hard disk. But now I'm looking at purchasing an SSD so that I can move the OS onto it to improve boot times and also to put the programs I use most often onto the SSD.

The problem is, there are no unused power cables in my system. So I was thinking I could purchase a SATA power cable splitter and attach it to the cable that powers the DVD drive, and then use the two cables to power the DVD drive and the SSD.

My question is whether this is a viable option or not? Obviously if this isn't a reliable way of doing it then I will think of other options. I'm just wondering whether this will supply insufficient power and damage the drive, or something bad like that.
