I found a good deal on a 16gb kit of A-tech DDR3 PC3 10600 DIMM/ 1333 MHz 2RX4 1.5V Ram for my dell optiplex 3020. The stock only has one 4gb stick, and this pair of 8 kit would replace the one dimm. Im just wondering if i can use Registered ECC Memory on the dell motherboard of a optiplex 3020 I dont know a whole lot about ram, and i cant find a clear answer atleast with my searches. Thanks for looking

Which exact model, mini tower, SFF or micro?

Mini Tower can use THESE, which is actaully more than what Dell says (but Crucial will guarantee it so refund if wrong -- may need a bios update though), while the micro which uses laptop type SODIMM modules -- not regular desktop dimms .

In general, according to Dell...

According to the technical specifications of the Dell Optiplex 3020, ECC memory is not supported (page 44).
The system supports up to 16GB of DDR3 1600 MHz (up to 8GB per module) Non-ECC RAM.

In general, according to Dell, the OptiPlex 3020 supports up to 8 GB DDR3 memory in 2X4GB configuration and the supported memory speed is 1600MHz. It does not support 1866MHz, but it can run it if the memory will support 1600MHz in its SPD. You could use: 8GB DDR3, 1600MHz, (2 x 4GB), 4GB DDR3, 1600MHz, (2 x 2GB), 4GB DDR3, 1600MHz, (1 x 4GB), or2GB DDR3, 1600MHz, (1 x 2GB) to be in Dell specs.

They all only support Unregistered and non-ECC RAM -- so no ECC!
