So here's the deal. My mother had a toshiba laptop with Vista on it that she upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium using the boxed version. That laptop is now sitting at the back of her closet, and hasnt been used for a year or so.

I now have the disc and the key for the upgrade and I have a boxed version of Vista that I still use (I know, I know).

Is it possible for me to use this product key and disc to upgrade my copy of VIsta to Windows 7 since hers is no longer in use.

Will I need to deactivate it (her laptop is at her house several states away) or will just re-registering do the trick?

Technically, the upgrade belongs to the laptop.

Now unofficially, nothing to stop you using it on your pc, but you will be prompted to activate, most probably over the phone, but easy to do and you just tell Microsoft its being installed on the same PC after a crash or some other little white lie.

You shouldn't use the laptop after upgrading your PC as Microsoft may disable both activation if you get caught :eek !
