I currently run an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T, ASUS geforce 750ti, and 16gb of RAM on an ASRock 970 Extreme4 mobo. I was thinking of upgrading to a different processor(and eventually a different GPU) But I wasn't sure if my mobo could handle a new processor. I'd like to avoid any extra costs if possible. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, you very well can. The FX 8350 is listed on ASRock 970 Extreme4 motberboard's "Supported CPU List"

AM3+* FX FD8350FRW8KHK 125W Vishera 4000MHz 2200MHz 2MBx4 8MB C0 P2.60

* For cooling the CPU and its surrounding components, please install a CPU cooler with a top-down blowing design.

Also note that it specifically recommends to use a third party cooler than a stock cooler that comes with the processor.

So get something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor ($165.93 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($28.89 @ OutletPC)
Total: $194.82
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Cheers!

I already have an Asetek 550lc. Is that sufficient? http://asetek.com/desktop/cpu-coolers/550lc.aspx

That seems a decent cooler, stick with it.

One more question. Do you think that I should go with the FX 8350, or is there a better cpu that is compatible with my mobo? Thanks so much for all the help.

Get any one of these from FX series released in Q2 2014:
AM3+* FX FD8370FRW8KHK 125W Vishera 4000MHz 2200MHz 2MBx4 8MB C0 P2.60
AM3+ FX FD837EWMW8KHK 95W Vishera 3300MHz 2200MHz 2MBx4 8MB C0 P2.60
AM3+ FX FD832EWMW8KHK 95W Vishera 3200MHz 2200MHz 2MBx4 8MB C0 P2.60

They are FX 8370 / 8370E / 8320E (E = Energy Efficient Processors with TDP of 95W)

Read the full review here and choose the one that fits your budget.

Avoid the E version, same price lower performance. You want best bang for buck get FX-8350. You can OC that to 4.6 on air or over 5 on water.

Wouldn't entertain running an 8 core 125w cpu on an asrock extreme board

Buy either a raijintek pallas or deepcool Gabriel cooler which both offer vrm cooling ( the Pallas is better) & over clock the ass off your 1055.

Failing that stick a 95w 6300 in it with one of the above coolers at a max - you'll hit 4.3/4.4ghz even on that crappy board.
