I'd like to use an AMD graphics card to drive a 2k monitor and have my 970 run the games that I play. Would I be able to do that on an Intel motherboard (Asus Maximus VII Hero)? I would not be using them in SLI, and I'd like an AMD GPU because it'd be a bit cheaper. Or should I just get a second 970 and run them in SLI? By the way, I have a custom waterloop in my build if that helps anyone with their decision.

I don't know how you'd go about it but it has been done in a Linus video I think it was, they used both cards in the same rig, AMD card for AMD optimised games and Nvidia when they were better optimised for that. I think the main problem was getting the drivers to play nicely with each other.

Found it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqkI7bOfRkA , a little different but I think it's more what you meant.

I think it would be easier to go for 970's in SLI though.
