Can I use ddr3 ram with skylake processors?

Soon I'm looking to upgrade my cpu to skylake, but for me to use the same ram as I'm using now, I'd have to get a ddr3 motherboard with lga1151 socket. After watching some videos to help, people have said that ddr3 isn't compatible skylake cpus, so basically, can I use 1600mhz ddr3 ram with a ddr3 motherboard with lga1151 to fit the i5 6600k.

Skylake was designed to be used with DDR4 and DDR3L(low voltage DDR3). There are socket 1151 boards that do support DDR3, however Intel has warned the extra voltage could reduce the lifespan of the memory controller(located on the cpu).

Note that DDR3 and DDR3L are slightly different and you really should be using DDR3L. It is likely that your current ram is just DDR3 and won't operate at a low enough voltage.

You need a Z170 motherboard (and a processor that ends in k) to be able to overclock.

Needless to say running memory that is over the spec voltage of the CPU and then overclocking said CPU is a recipe for disaster. Yeah it will work, but if there was ever a setup that I would say its possible to actually make the CPU fail sooner than later its this one.

DDR4 is cheap, dump your current memory and buy new DDR4 memory and the proper board.

Overclocking isn't my forte, but as I understand, you'll want to use the Z170 chipset for overclocking.

As I'm only a teen, I have to wait for events to afford components, and ddr4 memory and z170 chipsets seem expensive. I'd rather not break my pc, so I'll have to go with ddr4, thanks for your help.

Skylake DDR3 capable motherboards tend to be budget class.
You will need a better Z170 based motherboard to overclock a "K"
Actually, DDR3 and DDR4 perform similarly.
But, the DDR3 ram supported needs to run at 1.35v or less.
Most ddr3 1600 ram currently in use will be 1.5v and not supported.
Ram is cheap enough so plan on buying DDR4 ram that runs at the stock 1.2v. That will probably be 2133 speed or 2400.
Faster ram will take higher voltage.
There is very little benefit for most apps from ram faster than 1.2v 2400 speed.

I also suspect that running ram at 1.35v will have a negative impact on your overclocking potential for the multiplier.

Almost all Skylake Z170 motherboards support DDR4. In fact most DDR3 ones say so in the name of the board (usually it ends in D3) so when you're ready to buy thats what you would look for.

Yes. It should all be compatible, but I'm not sure about overclocking on the H170 chipset.

Yes compatible but you cannot overclock on that H170 motherboard. The second one you posted will do the job.
