Can i use external mic with my usb headset which has spoiled mic itself?

I have a usb headset whose audio is working well but it's mic isn't. I think that mic is dead. My real question is that can i connect an external mic for my sound recording and my headset for audio only. Would my PC read the different mic and audio device? I just dont want to throw my headset because it has very good audio. Please help me.

This should work - you have the ability to assign separate audio devices for playback (your headset), and recording (extra mike).

And how can i do that? I mean is there any procedure for that? Please tell me

right click on the speaker icon on the taskbar near the clock, when the menu appears click on recording devices, in the window that pops up select the microphone and set it as the default device. click on ok or save and exit.
