Im planning to buy an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 but my motherboard is ASUS Rampage 2 Extreme - and i think it supports PCI EXPRESS 2.0 or so.
I have an Nvidia PCIe GTX 1070 Founders Edition. My question is will the new graphics card work on older hardware?

Sort answer, yes.

I am not really sure if you would be able to see much of a difference due to the revision, more likely that other hardware limitations would be more obvious culprits.

Make sure your power supply is up to task.

If your planning buy new cards then you need to spend that money on updating your system CPU motherboard cooler storage and then spend money on new GPU. Your cpu been release on
Release Date:Jun 2nd, 2009

Its 14 years old now since cpu come out and will not work with newer cards
my budget is 400 euro! how can i update motherboard to new with 400 euro for a CPU + motherboard + memory.

4080 is to powerful for your CPU to cope with and you be missing out on good performance on 4080 edited you need a brand new system like new motherboard and CPU and good storage like SSD drive to gain that full peformance from your 4080
awesome ok.. does older hard drives work on a new motherboard? for example western digital velociraptor?

Yes, but again you would want to replace those.

Modern NVMe SSDs are way faster and more reliable.
i have a SSD actually and yes i agree its a big difference. but my goal is computer for music production and maybe gaming on my weekends.. i do not need anymore super amazing epic hardware like overclocking motherboard and stuff.. my old computer is at that time in 2009 was the best in the world i bought all the best of the best.

And I wouldn't trust a 15 year old Velociraptor with holding a simple text file.... :ptdr:

Hard drives don't usually last that long. Any data you have on them now is at a pretty heavy risk without a backup scheme.

What would those be 300GB WD Raptors or something, at most? A 2TB SATA SSD is pretty cheap these days. NVMe storage is an order of magnitude faster and nearly as cheap. You just need a motherboard with M.2 slots.

It's still a crazy pairing not worth doing. What country do you live in and do you have a preferred online retailer?

You say you want to play some games, can you name some? 2D indy games for example are very different in requirements to triple A games like Hogwarts Legacy with ray tracing.
i play old computer games like half life, quake, red alert 1. but uh i thought the new upcoming big game title such as tomb raider, alan wake, next stalker etc... shouldnt it make sense to get a good card for this games?

With those old games, a 40xx GPU gives NO benefit over what you have now.
Especially paired with your current ancient hardware.

For the new games, your old hardware will cry massively.

It does but you need an appropriate CPU to drive the graphics card. While your CPU was a monster in it's day and has lasted well. 14 years have passed since it's release, it's no longer appropriate to pair it with a modern GPU.

The minimum system requirements for Alan Wake for example are a Ryzen 5 2600 or i5 8600, both relatively modern 6 core CPU's.

My two cents would be, to repurpose this PC as a backup machine and build a budget gaming gaming rig, possibly an AMD AM4 machine. You won't be able to do it for 400 euros though, unfortunately you'd have to nearly double your budget. A quick mock up of what that might look like would be something like:

that rx6600 might not be sufficient for stalker 2....i hear its extremely demanding. the devs say the UE5 engine struggles on a rtx4060.
and also i wouldnt use a single m.2 for music production. use 1 for os and programs and and a ssd for finished bounced tracks. i actually use a external HD incase of a fire or accident.

I've picked everything on cost, I agree it's not optimal system. My expectation was anything could be made playable on the RX 6600 with compromises. That maybe true on the 4060 but that seems an awfully high bar of entry to play the game.
