Hi, would I be able to clean old thermal compound off my laptop's cpu and gpu using Pledge Electronic Cleaning Spray made by Johnson? I am sure it contains Methylisothiazolinone.

Thanks,
Fraser

I wouldn't. I know the stuff you're talking about, even those electronic safe dust sprays are a tad greasy. They do well for the outside of a pc case or wiping off dvd players and stuff but not good for the cpu. Alcohol is safe, non caustic, evaporates and leaves no residue behind which makes it perfect (plus it's cheap, so bonus).

Pledge Electronic Cleaning Spray is only used for cleaning the exterior surface of your TV, computer case, keyboard, monitor, mobile phone, etc.

You can use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.

I've used pure acetone to clean the TIM off of my CPU and heatsink.

The alcohol is the active solvent that removes the thermal compound. The distilled water just dilutes the solution.

This would be more effective:

or

Would I be able to get this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/271341502812?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108

Thanks

Isopropanol and isopropyl alcohol are exactly the same substance.

Isopropanol is technically the incorrect name for it.

Oh okay! would I be able to use cotton buds to take off the old thermal compound as I have no lint free cloth or coffee filters?

Cotton balls should be okay. I use paper towel dipped in the solvent to do my cleaning of the TIM. Just make sure no cotton or paper fibers are left on the CPU heat spreader and/or heatsink's contact surface.

Yes it should. Coffee filters are cheap though if you don't mind buying them haha.
