Hi everybody, first time asker and builder.

I'm preparing to build my first desktop. I have a laptop with an i7 processor (not sure of model but it is 2.66 GHz). Im going for a gaming rig, I would like to save myself some money and buy an i3 for my laptop and transfer the i7 from my laptop to my desktop. So my two questions are, can I do that? and is it cost effective?

Thank you in advance.

No laptop I7's share the same name as thier desktop cousing but they are not the same. Laptop I7's use a different socket, lower clock speeds and lower TDP You can't put a Sandy Bridges or Ivy Bridges laptop I7 in a desktop socket.

no more than likely its soldered to the board for starters and its a different socket pin arrangement anyways afaik

No. You have to have a desktop processor for a desktop build.. while yes a Desktop i7 is similar to a Notebook i7... no they are not the same. .. You can't change your laptops CPU's.. the CPU's are sauder'd into the laptops PCB.

alright then, no big deal. Thank you all so much for answering me. have a happy holiday season. out of curiosity, if any of you have a gaming pc build, what is it?just so i have an idea of what I should be shopping for.

180 on a board not really an economical way to build a gaming rig now especially from jetway a desktop alternate half the price will be better so not such a good idea
