I am upgrading my computer and was wondering if I can use a Server CPU on a Desktop PC. It is a gaming PC but I won't be doing any overclocking. I chose the Xeon E5-1620 v3 because it was faster than the Desktop Processors in it's class that I found. Here are my specs including the Server CPU:

Alienware Aurora (2011 Model) Quad core

Motherboard
ASUS uATX X99-M WS (LGA 2011 v3)

CPU
Xeon E5-1620 v3

Video/ Graphics Card
EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB SSC Gaming ACX 2.0+

RAM
Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz

PSU
Dell W299G 875W PSU

Hard drive
-2TB RAID 0 (2x 1TB SATA-II, 7, 200 RPM, 32MB Cache HDDs)
-1TB - SATA-II, 3Gb/s, 7,200RPM , 32MB Cache HDD

Solution
Sure, I am doing so right now (using a Xeon based rig). As long as the CPU is compatible with the motherboard, you are good to go.

I have a liquid cooling unit that came with my PC. I was just going to use that.

Great!

Best of luck with the build. Enjoy!
